2 MVA Inverter Duty Transformers for 5 MW Solar Farm — Karnataka
A 5 MW ground-mount solar project in Karnataka required four 500 kVA inverter duty transformers to step up inverter output for grid injection. The EPC contractor had previously used standard distribution transformers on a smaller project — and experienced overheating and insulation failure within 18 months.
The Challenge
Solar inverter output contains significant DC offset and harmonic content that standard transformers are not designed to handle. The result is elevated winding temperature, accelerated insulation aging, and premature failure. For a 5 MW project with a 25-year design life, transformer failure is not a maintenance issue — it is a financial one. The EPC team needed K-factor rated units with outdoor weatherproof enclosures and compatibility verified against their specific inverter brand.
The Actaan Solution
Actaan Electric supplied four 500 kVA K-factor rated inverter duty transformers, each verified against the inverter manufacturer's output specifications. The transformers were wound with electrostatic shielding to suppress DC offset, over-dimensioned cores for harmonic flux, and IP54 weatherproof outdoor enclosures. Delivery was phased to match the project's civil and inverter installation schedule.
